Sunday morning brought the Pau Hana Parrot Heads out to Ala Moana Beach Park for a very early start to a great event. We had twenty die hard members show up at 4:30 am to start setting up our “water station” for the “Run Like a Diva” Wahine Half Marathon and 5k Race. Regardless of the early time it was a beautiful day for a race, and quite a magnificent sight seeing a nearly full moon set over the Pacific to the West, and the sun raising over Diamond Head in the East.

Everyone jumped right in, and did a fantastic job of setting up the canopy, sound system, tables and pouring thousands of cups of cold water in preparation for the 2500 race participants. At 6:30 am the first runner’s started passing through our station and were greeted with plenty of cheers, loud Buffett and Trop Rock tunes and plenty of ice cold water. The morning flew by as the coarse brought the “Divas” through our area a total of five times before it ended three and a half hours later.

The “Pau Hana Station”, ran very smoothly and went better that could have been expected for our first attempt. Everyone really jumped right in from the start and worked very hard to make this a successful venture for our club. We even had three “Parakeets” who worked their tails off the entire morning, handing out water and raking up cups, without any complaints. Everyone seemed to have a great time, even with the early start many folks have asked when we can do another!!! We had some great suggestions for future water stations, to make them even more interesting for the runners and improved exposure for our club, we welcome and additional ideas folks may have.

The “Run Like a Diva” organization will be donating $200 to the Leeward Domestic Abuse Shelter Child & Family Service “House of Hope”, on behalf of the Pau Hana Parrot Heads. In total we donated 120 man hours to this great event.

Again a big Mahalo to all the folks who came out for this event, and a special thanks to Karen Bullard and David Isaacson for their time and efforts in coordinating with the event organizers and setting this activity up for us. Also thanks to Clay Deaver for again letting us borrow his generator, fantastic sound system and making sure we had nonstop music for the entire day, we really appreciate it…It’s folks like you who show up for not only the parties, but other community service and charitable activities as well that make this a great club.
